Rubber > Keep You Warm

Born in the cold

“Protecting fishermen from the cold water” — this was the mission YAMAMOTO set in 1961. At the time, divers had to endure freezing water, warm themselves by the fire, and dive again... This harsh cycle placed a serious burden on their bodies, forcing many to retire in their 30s. Sadly, they had no choice but to dive from morning until evening to make a living. With the arrival of YAMAMOTO’s highly insulating materials, everything changed. Frequent breaks were no longer needed, productivity improved, and many could continue diving well into their 60s and 70s. YAMAMOTO materials were greatly appreciated and accepted by them. Since then, thermal protection has been at the core of YAMAMOTO’s work.

How It Works

Wetsuit material may look solid, but it actually contains countless micro bubbles (cells). Each cell is filled with nitrogen gas, which has 24 times more thermal resistance than water. These cells act as insulation, helping you stay warm and comfortable even in the ice-cold water.

Why YAMAMOTO?

The basic insulation mechanism is the same across all wetsuit materials. However, professionals still choose YAMAMOTO for a reason. Why? Take a closer look — the secret is in the smallest details.

Here is a microscopic image at 200x magnification. The strand on the left is a human hair for scale. Competitor’s material was taken from wetsuits on the market sold at USD 500.

  1. Cell Size: YAMAMOTO’s cells are as small as a human hair, while the competitor’s cells are 10–100 times larger by volume.
  2. Cell Structure: YAMAMOTO features fully-sealed independent cells, while competitor’s cells are often interconnected.

Why does it matter in the water? Let’s put each wetsuit and dive in.

In the competitor’s wetsuit, oversized and interconnected cells create fewer effective insulation layers, and even worse, the open cells let water seep in. Water steals heat 24 times faster than nitrogen gas, leaving the wetsuit heavy and cold.

YAMAMOTO, on the other hand, has tiny, independent closed-cells. This unique structure creates multiple insulating layers — like stacking thin garments. It also prevents water from entering and keeps the wetsuit light and warm.

YAMAMOTO Independent Microcells™ technology creates closed-cells as fine as a strand of hair — delivering exceptional insulation. In the end, it’s the invisible smallest details that make the biggest difference.

The Secret of the Warmth

The secret of YAMAMOTO’s warmth lies in its independent microcells™. Achieving this perfect structure requires a delicate balance between vulcanization and foaming. This is made possible by the combination of an old yet precise machine — capable of controlling temperature in 0.1℃ increments — and the expertise of skilled Japanese craftsmen who fine-tune the temperature based on the material’s condition.

What our logo means

In fact, YAMAMOTO logo symbolizes the perfectly independent cell structure. It represents our ongoing commitment to creating this invisible yet essential structure — and to creating a world where people can enjoy their own “blue.” This mission, unchanged since our founding, is at the heart of our logo.

Tips to keep you even warmer

While YAMAMOTO materials offer exceptional insulation on their own, a warm and comfortable experience also depends on other factors, such as:

  • Proper fit: A loose wetsuit allows water to flow in and out, robbing your body of heat. Choose a suit that fits you perfectly.
  • Appropriate thickness: YAMAMOTO materials can provide great insulation even when thin. However, be sure to choose the right thickness based on your usage conditions.
  • Seam protection: Water can enter through stitching threads. Suits with taped seams or GBS (glued and blind-stitched) construction help prevent water- intrusion.
  • Surface finishing: Jersey absorbs water and can cause heat loss through evaporation when wind blows. Skin-surface rubber repels water and helps retain warmth in windy conditions.
